| All Spartan warriors carried shields that bore the Greek letter lambda 'Λ.' It stood for Laconia, the area in Southern Greece where in the 10TH Century BC the Spartans had settled after defeating the local populace and founded the city of Sparta. Between c740-720 BC, the Spartans defeated the neighboring state of Messenia making Sparta one of the largest and most powerful Greek states. |  |
